HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints stormed out of the blocks by scoring the first four goals of the contest.
Emmery Clark fed a cutting
Devyn Dimovitz for the first goal of the game.
Helen Bae sprinted down the middle of the field and fired in a score to double the Maryville lead. Murphy rocketed in a shot from the middle of the field and converted a free-position attempt to make it 4-0. UIndy finally broke through for its opening goal on a free-position shot to halt the Maryville burst. The Saints won the ensuing draw control and
Natalie Tomljenovic threaded a perfect pass across the crease that led to Dimovitz's second score. UIndy pulled another goal back but then had an apparent third goal waved off. The Saints came right down the field, and Bae deposited a slow shot into the corner for a 6-2 advantage after the opening quarter.
Â
Early in the second, the Saints enjoyed a two-player up situation, and drew a free-position attempt. Murphy fired in a shot into the upper left to complete a hat trick as the Saints built a 7-2 margin. The defenses took over and did not allow a score until the Greyhounds scored on a free position. UIndy closed the gap to 7-5 but Guzek made a crucial save. On the ensuing clear, the Saints drew a green card. On the player-up advantage, Murphy rocketed in a low shot to the far side for an 8-5 lead at halftime.
Â
The Greyhounds tallied twice to open the third quarter but Clark used a shot fake and went up high to push the Maryville margin to 9-7. The teams traded goals with
Kylie Pettus tucking a free-position shot just inside the right post for a 10-8 cushion. The Saints took a 10-9 lead into the final frame.
Â
Neither team generated a score until UIndy recorded back-to-back goals, with the Greyhounds taking their first lead of the day at 11-10 with just under 11 minutes to play. The Saints answered on a Murphy free position shot into the upper left corner to make it 11-11. UIndy had a chance to go ahead but Guzek saved a free position shot with five minutes remaining. With the shot clock winding down,
Mady Richert fed Murphy in the middle of the UIndy defense who turned and fired in a goal with 2:24 left for a 12-11 lead. However, the Greyhounds tied the game with 43 seconds to play. UIndy claimed the ensuing draw control, and Malaena Michielin scored the winner with 11 seconds remaining.
