SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Maryville baseball team was able to salvage the series at UIS on Sunday, taking the final game of the four-game set 9-3, scoring eight of their runs in the final three games.
Dominic Anselmo and
Tim Leark both had multi-RBI games in the win, Anselmo tallying three while Leark snagged two.
On the mound,
Noah Leingang picked up his first career win, going three scoreless in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Unlike the rest of the series, it was UIS who took the early lead, scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Sandwiched in-between the run scoring innings was Learks first RBI, a single into right field allowing
Andrew Gould to score.
Leark again struck, this time in the seventh, ripping a ball at the second basemen for a hit, scoring Gould yet again.
Jack Meyer, just one at bat later, took the second pitch he saw into right field to tie the game.
The hits kept playing as Anselmo also singled, giving the Saints the lead.
Steven Schneider and
Aaris Stolte ended the big seventh inning with RBIs of their own to take the lead to 6-3.
In the eighth, Anselmo looked to have blown it wide open as on a eight pitch at bat he sent a ball out of the park, but after a UIS appeal, it was deemed that he did not step on home, resulting in Anselmo being out on appeal, leaving him with a 2 RBI triple.
Nick Daugherty finished off the scoring with his left center single in the ninth.
Nolan Miller was excellent over five, striking out three batters in his start while holding a stout UIS offense to just two runs. Leingang and
Collin Greiner finished the job with four-innings of nearly perfect ball in relief.
UP NEXT
After a big GLVC win to finish out the series, the games do not get any less important as the Saints head out west to Rolla, Mo. for a four-game set with the Missouri S&T Miners, who lead the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
