ST. LOUIS - The Maryville men's volleyball team dropped the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title match as Missouri S&T recorded a 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 win.
Makai Scott and
Jake Usher were selected to the All-Tournament team for the Saints. Scott finished with 13 kills in the title match, while Usher handed out 34 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints took the early lead on kills by
Aidan Whitemountain and
AJ Robateau. However, the Miners took a 6-2 lead. The Saints stayed close at 16-13 following a block by
Tristan Benbow and Whitemountain. However, the visitors tallied four straight points to grab a seven-point lead. The Saints got to within 22-17 on a Scott kill but would not get closer.
Set two was close throughout and saw 16 ties. The Saints tied the set at 16-16 on a Scott kill but the visitors tallied three straight. Maryville answered on a Scott kill and a Miner error to pull back to 19-18. However, the Miners tallied four straight and held on for another 25-19.
Peter Soczewka and Robateau had a bock, and Soczewka put down a kill to trim the Miners lead to 3-2. The visitors scored five of the next six points to establish an 8-3 edge.
Luke Martinez drilled down a kill as the Saints scored three of the next four points. He had another kill and Whitemountain followed to make it 9-6. Scott put down back-to-back kills and make it 13-10. The Miners responded with a 4-1 run. Scott put down consecutive kills but three straight by the Miners gave them a cushion as they held on toe win the first GLVC title.
