FAYETTE, Mo. – The Maryville softball team delivered two convincing wins in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play, defeating Upper Iowa 11-0 and 9-0 on the road, both in five innings.
Laila Ruiz exploded for six RBIs across the two games, going 4 for 6 at the plate. In the circle,
Cora Boyle tossed a complete-game shutout in Game 1, allowing four hits and one walk on just 63 pitches.
Game 2 saw
Aubrey Scieszinski and
Mia Maxel combine for a one-hit, five-inning shutout, with Maxel closing out the fifth on just eight pitches.
GAME 1 | Maryville 11, Upper Iowa 0
The Saints wasted no time jumping ahead.
Jenna Kosnoff doubled to open the game, followed by a bunt single from
Mandi Lenon. Ruiz then roped a single up the middle to score both runners and give Maryville a 2-0 lead.
Kaitlyn Wagner added another run on an RBI groundout, and an Upper Iowa error made it 4-0.
The Saints were quiet for the next few innings before breaking things open in the fourth.
Leah Perales led off with a single, sparking a stretch of seven straight batters reaching base and resulting in five runs. Lenon, Ruiz,
Addison Koth and
Emily Erb all recorded RBIs in the inning.
A two-run single by Wagner in the fifth sealed the run-rule victory.
GAME 2 | Maryville 9, Upper Iowa 0
Once again, the Saints struck early, plating four runs in the first inning. Kosnoff led off with a hit, and Lenon followed with a bunt single to put two on.
A Wagner single and a
Marley Williamson double to right field pushed the lead to 3-0, before
Cailynn Gdowski added another with an RBI single.
Maryville added to its lead in the fourth, when Koth broke the scoring lull with a 12-pitch at-bat that ended in a home run to left-center, her 15th of the season, making it 6-0.
Ruiz capped the scoring with a bases-loaded single in the fifth, driving in three runs to set the final score.
