Pitching Dominates as Saints Sail Past Peacocks

FAYETTE, Mo. – The Maryville softball team delivered two convincing wins in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play, defeating Upper Iowa 11-0 and 9-0 on the road, both in five innings.

Laila Ruiz exploded for six RBIs across the two games, going 4 for 6 at the plate. In the circle, Cora Boyle tossed a complete-game shutout in Game 1, allowing four hits and one walk on just 63 pitches.

Game 2 saw Aubrey Scieszinski and Mia Maxel combine for a one-hit, five-inning shutout, with Maxel closing out the fifth on just eight pitches.

GAME 1 | Maryville 11, Upper Iowa 0
The Saints wasted no time jumping ahead. Jenna Kosnoff doubled to open the game, followed by a bunt single from Mandi Lenon. Ruiz then roped a single up the middle to score both runners and give Maryville a 2-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Wagner added another run on an RBI groundout, and an Upper Iowa error made it 4-0.

The Saints were quiet for the next few innings before breaking things open in the fourth. Leah Perales led off with a single, sparking a stretch of seven straight batters reaching base and resulting in five runs. Lenon, Ruiz, Addison Koth and Emily Erb all recorded RBIs in the inning.

A two-run single by Wagner in the fifth sealed the run-rule victory.

GAME 2 | Maryville 9, Upper Iowa 0
Once again, the Saints struck early, plating four runs in the first inning. Kosnoff led off with a hit, and Lenon followed with a bunt single to put two on.

A Wagner single and a Marley Williamson double to right field pushed the lead to 3-0, before Cailynn Gdowski added another with an RBI single.

Maryville added to its lead in the fourth, when Koth broke the scoring lull with a 12-pitch at-bat that ended in a home run to left-center, her 15th of the season, making it 6-0.

Ruiz capped the scoring with a bases-loaded single in the fifth, driving in three runs to set the final score.
