ST. LOUIS – Despite a solo home run from sophomore
Andrew Gould, the Maryville baseball team fell 5-1 in midweek action to Quincy.
Gould led the Saints at the plate and was the only player with multiple hits, homering in the third inning and adding a single in the seventh.
On the mound, it was a bullpen day for the Saints.
Owen Nesslage made his first career start, going four innings with four strikeouts and no earned runs.
Jeffrey Henry,
Drew Patrick and Colin Kelly each tossed scoreless relief appearances, with Kelly working two clean innings.
Maryville left nine runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings from Nesslage, Quincy struck first. A stolen base by the Hawks' GLVC stolen base leader Jace Figereo turned into a run after two Maryville errors, giving Quincy a 1-0 lead.
The Saints answered immediately in the bottom of the third, as Gould led off the inning with his second home run of the year, a line drive down the left-field line to tie the game.
The score remained even until Quincy broke through in the sixth, plating four runs. Two came on a ball lost in the sun that dropped for a double and extended the inning.
Maryville threatened in the seventh, loading the bases on back-to-back singles from
Greyson Rathgeb, Gould and
Matthew Rauser. However, a called third strike and a fielder's choice ended the rally.
Aaris Stolte added a double down the line in the eighth, but was left stranded.
