ST. LOUIS – The Maryville softball team split its regular-season finale doubleheader with the Truman State Bulldogs. The Saints took the opener 4-3 behind stellar bullpen pitching, while the Saints fell in game two 8-1 after a pair of Bulldog big innings.
Â
Cora Boyle earned the win in game one, with
Mia Maxel snagging a three-inning save. Offensively, the opener saw
Marley Williamson and
Leah Perales both have RBIs.
Â
Game two saw the Saints leave eight runners on base, with a pair of errors proving costly to the Saints.
Â
Before the start of the twin bill, the Saint celebrated their three seniors in
Mandi Lenon,
Kaitlyn Wagner and Williamson.
Â
GAME 1 | Maryville 4, Truman State 3
The Saints plated four in the first, an offensive explosion that proved to be the decider. Back-to-back-to-back singles by the Saints opened the bottom of the first, with a wild pitching bringing home the first run. A Williamson single later added another as did a Perales hit-by-pitch.
The final run came on an E4 that gave the Saints the 4-0 lead.
Â
A two-RBI triple in the third and then a single cut the Saints lead to one.
Maxel came in to throw in the fifth, with the freshman striking out the first two batters she faced. She went on to punch out another, allowing two hits but keeping the lead in the hands of the Saints for the win.
Â
GAME 2 | Truman State 8, Maryville 1
Despite putting runner on the corners in the bottom of the first with one out, the Saints were unable to score, setting the tone for how the nightcap would turn out for the bats.
Â
Truman plated runs in the next three frames, with big blows of a four-spot in the third and three in the fourth ballooning the lead to 8-0.
Maryville finally scratched one across on a Kosnoff single in the fourth, but that was the last sign of life as the Saints had just one hit in the final three frames.
