Men’s Soccer’s Offensive Onslaught Overwhelms Lewis

ST. LOUIS – Four different players found the back of the net as the Maryville men's soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play with a 4-1 victory over Lewis on Wednesday.

Yayo Mutombo and Axton Anom gave Maryville a two-goal advantage at halftime before Jan Fulnek and Phoenix Kolte added second-half tallies. Jacob Lusignan led the Saints with two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints needed fewer than three minutes to open the scoring. Mutombo collected a pass from Leyson Losada and scored his second goal of the season in the third minute.

Anom doubled the lead in the 38th minute, converting Lusignan's feed for his first goal of the campaign.

Maryville pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the 61st minute when Fulnek buried a penalty kick for his second goal of the year.

Lewis pulled one back in the 73rd minute, but Kolte answered less than four minutes later. Julian Stoecker and Lusignan combined to set up Kolte's first career goal, restoring the Saints' three-goal cushion.

The teams finished even with 12 shots and five attempts on goal apiece. Maryville held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Asgrimur Vidisson made four saves, all in the second half, to secure his third victory of the season.

UP NEXT
The Saints load the busses and head to Kirksville, Mo., for a battle with the Truman State Bulldogs Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2:30 p.m.
