KIRKSVILLE, MO. – The Maryville University volleyball team trekked to Kirksville, Mo., Friday for a pair of non-conference matches. The Saints downed Newman 3-1 before falling in a non-league match 3-0 against host Truman State. Maryville defeated the Jets 25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13 but were edged out by the Bulldogs 25-22, 25-23, 27-25.
 
Newman Recap
The Saints hit .308 in set one while holding the Jets to an .087 mark to roll to the win in the opener. Up 10-9, the Saints reeled off six straight points to take command. Natalie Frazier picked up two assists and a block by Joanna Gillen pushed the advantage to 16-9. Still up 18-11, Gillen and Emma Keele teamed up on a block that sparked a 5-0 run. Hannah Patton served two aces as the cushion reached double figures. The Jets tried to make a late push but Keele's kill ended the set at 25-17.
 
Maryville continued its hot hitting in set two, putting down kills at a .323 rate. The Saints led by as many as seven points but saw their edge drop down to 18-16. Leslie Longanbach had a kill, and Keele served an ace for a 20-16 lead. Frazier and Ella Domian had back-to-back kills as the Saints stabilized their margin. Domian put down a cross court kill to end the set 25-18.
 
The Saints had their lowest hitting percentage in set three as Newman got on the board. Maryville answered with its best hitting mark in the match to close the contest. Emma Hoing gave a lift off the bench with two early kills as the Saints scored four straight to build a 5-1 margin. Still up 7-4, the Saints reeled off four-in-a-row to grab command. Frazier had a kill before a Newman error. After an ace by Mallory Sell, Frazier put down another ball for an 11-5 edge. The Saints scored four of the next five points and eventually went up 16-7 when Hoing drilled down a pass. Longanbach's kill pushed the advantage to double digits at 19-9. The Saints cruised to the win, capped by a block by Gillen and Caroline Glastetter.

The Saints were down 4-1 to open the match but reeled off six straight points. Caroline Glastetter had a kill to start the run and the Saints had three blocks during the burst. An ace by Sell pushed the Saints on top 7-4. Maryville pushed the margin to 12-6 before the Bulldogs slowly inched back into the set. A Gillen kill put the lead at 15-10 but Truman tied the score at 15-all Frazier's kill gave Maryville a final lead at 16-15 before the Bulldogs went back ahead. The Saints saved four set points but never drew even.
 
Maryville took a narrow lead to start set two and were still up 9-5 after an Ellie Witthaus kill. The teams traded the lead but a kill by Keele put the Saints back on top 11-10. Truman went back ahead and were leading 19-17. Gillen put down back-to-back kills to forge a 19-all tie. The Bulldogs scored two straight before Gillen again answered for the Saints. Hoing put down consecutive kills, and a Domian kill saved another set point before Truman converted.
 
Set three was close throughout and the Saints trailed 17-15 before climbing ahead on a 4-0 run. A Gillen kill tied the score at 17-17, and Domian finished a pass for a 19-17 lead. The Saints were still up 22-19 after a kill by Hoing but Truman tied the score at 22-22. Truman led 24-23 but Keele put down a kill to draw even, and a Domian tip gave the Saints a 25-24 lead. However, Truman tallied three straight kills to close out the match at 27-25.
