KIRKSVILLE, MO. – Maryville women's soccer built a two-goal lead Sunday but host Truman State rallied in the second half as the teams eventually settled for a 2-2 tie.
Emily Doane and
Isabella Moilanen netted goals for the Saints.
Agnes Vilen made a career-high eight saves for Maryville.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints had two good scoring chances early when Moilanen's low attempt was turned aside. A few minutes later,
Carissa Speight had a drive on goal saved, and
Sophia Carter followed up but dragged her attempt outside the far post wide. The Saints broke through midway through the half with a quick midfield build up.
Allison Estanich placed a perfectly weighted pass up the middle of the Truman defense.
Ava Ernst took a one-time touch pass to Doane who volleyed a low bullet just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead. Truman State had four shots on goal in the first half but Maryville goalie
Agnes Vilen came up with a save each time.
Â
Maryville's high press forced an early turnover in the second half that led to a
Gabby Tucker attempt that was saved. A few minutes later, Estanich put a low shot on frame that was also snared by Truman's keeper. The Bulldogs nearly equalized but Vilen came up to challenge the Truman shooter which allowed a Maryville defender to save the shot on the line. Vilen stopped the ensuing attempt to preserve the Maryville lead.
Â
After a Truman free kick, the Saints intercepted and pushed the ball up the right side.
Hailey Scheuer lofted in a cross to the far side, and Moilanen headed the ball into the upper left corner to double the Maryville lead in the 59th minute. The Saints had two chances to build on to their lead but misfired. However, Truman State pulled one score back with a goal in the 66th minute to trim the Maryville margin down to 2-1. The Saints nearly restored their two-goal margin when
Anne van Son's high shot was saved. Truman drew even on a counterattack in the 78th minute of play to forge a 2-2 tie. Truman State nearly scored twice in the waning minutes of the game. Vilen skied high to her right to parry the ball away and later sprinted to her left to snare the shot and preserve the draw.
