ST. LOUIS – Maryville field hockey had its home opener spoiled as Sewanee slipped past the Saints 3-0 Saturday. Maryville earned more penalty corners than the Tigers and took 14 shots but were unable to dent the scoreboard.

How it Happened:
The Saints enjoyed possession early and had two shots on goal by
Consuelo Torres Moore and
Charissa Van den Hoorn but both were turned aside. Sewanee had an excellent scoring chance but goalie
Bri Raak, making her first start, made a dazzling save as the quarter ended scoreless.

The Tigers had two more chances to score as Raak made two more stops but broke through on the third attempt to take a 1-0 lead. Sewanee nearly doubled its lead late but
Sophia Newton came up with a defensive save to keep the gap at 1-0.

Maryville had its best scoring opportunities in the third. Off a penalty corner, Torres Moore smashed a shot off the post and had two more attempts saved. The Saints searched for a goal but pushed two attempts wide.

The Saints pulled their goalie midway through the fourth quarter in an attempt to get back into the game. However, Sewanee tacked on a late goal to seal the win. The Saints totaled four defensive saves on the day, including two by Newton.

What's Next?
The Saints welcome Slippery Rock for a pair of games at Maryville Athletic Complex. The teams will play Saturday, Sept. 26, in a Noon start, and again Sunday, Sept. 27, for an 11 a.m. contest.
