FAYETTE, Iowa. – Maryville men's soccer used a pair of second-half goals by defenders
Simon Schlunder and
Julian Stoecker to fly past the Upper Iowa Peacocks, 3-1.
Petter Hanssen added his third goal of the year in the first half on route to the win.
Asgrimur Vidisson made five saves in the win while facing nine total shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Offensive Player of the Week
Omar Cilic generated Maryville's first chance, striking the left post in the 14th minute.
Alex Smeins added an attempt in the 19th.
In the 36th minute,
Axton Anom played a ball past two Peacocks to an open
Stan Valentine, who sent it forward to Hanssen. Hanssen eluded two defenders and placed a shot into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead that held through halftime.
Just ten minutes in the second half, the Saints and Peacocks found themselves in the same spot from where Hanssen's goal started, but with the Peacocks applying pressure this time. A throw in would be headed twice, falling right to a Peacock who blasted it bar down to tie the contest.
The deadlock not last long. In the 59th minute,
Jan Fulnek delivered a ball to Schlunder, who headed home his first goal of the season to put Maryville back in front.
The physical play picked up from there. Upper Iowa received yellow cards in the 68th and 71st minutes, while Maryville was also cautioned during that stretch.
As the game drew down, the Saints kept applying pressure, eventually resulting in a foul in the box on UIU with Stoecker taking the honors and converting for the insurance goal.
