ST. LOUIS – Julian Stoecker buried a penalty kick in the 90th minute to complete Maryville men's soccer's comeback against Missouri S&T on Homecoming, lifting the Saints to a 2-1 win. The victory marks the fourth in a row for the Saints and keeps them unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Saints trailed for nearly the entire first half before
Lukas Molander struck with just 17 seconds left before halftime.
Henry Atkinson assisted on Molander's first goal of the season, sending Maryville into the break level at 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maryville nearly opened the scoring in the second minute when
Yayo Mutombo put a shot on goal, but Missouri S&T took the lead in the 10th. The Saints pushed for an answer, with
Petter Hanssen forcing a save in the 23rd minute and
Enzo Manga Mbassa sending two attempts off target later in the half.
The breakthrough came at 44:43. Atkinson, who had entered five minutes earlier, set up Molander for the equalizer moments before the halftime whistle.
Missouri S&T tested
Asgrimur Vidisson twice early in the second half, but the Saints goalkeeper turned away both shots to keep the match tied. Maryville's chances in the half came from
Omar Cilic,
Axton Anom and
Jose Vilela before a late foul gave Stoecker his opportunity from the spot. He converted at 88:56 for his third goal of the season.
The Miners pressed in the final minute, putting two shots into the Maryville defense, but neither got through. Vidisson finished with four saves.
