Raak Comes up with 17 Saves but No. 9 Slippery Rock Defeats Saints Field Hockey

ST. LOUIS – Maryville field hockey freshman goalie Bri Raak was scintillating in goal as she recorded 17 saves, including one on a penalty stroke,  but the Saints were unable to take down No. 9 Slippery Rock. The visitors remained as one of only three unbeaten teams with a 3-0 win over the Saints. Raak's 17 saves are tied for the third most in a game in program history.

How it Happened:
The Rock was looking to grab the lead but Raak made four saves as the game was scoreless after one quarter. Slippery Rock pushed forward but Raak made a pair of saves, and Saints defenders Ava Eiler and Inke Nel both cleared shots off the line. However, The Rock finally broke though in the 22nd minute of play. Raak continued to stymie the visitors and came up with seven more saves as Slippery Rock settled for a tenuous 1-0 lead at halftime.

Slippery Rock added an early goal after halftime to double its lead. The Saints possessed the ball more in the third quarter, and earned a penalty corner. Charissa Van den Hoorn put a shot on frame but it was turned aside. Late in the third quarter, Slippery Rock drew a penalty stroke. The Rock was poised to add on to its advantage, but Raak stoned the shooter to keep the Saints within striking distance.

Consuelo Torres Moore had another good scoring chance for the Saints but her shot was saved. Maryville earned a penalty corner but Torres Moore's attempt was just wide. The Saints finished with 20 team saves, also tied for the third most in a contest.
