ST. LOUIS – Despite sweltering heat on Lonnie Folks Field, Maryville men's soccer was able to use a pair of second-half goals from
Paulo Junior Sousa Rodrigues and
Omar Cilic to earn a 2-0 victory over Cedarville on Saturday.
Both players recorded their first goals of the season, scoring just over 10 minutes apart.
Asgrimur Vidisson made four saves to earn his second shutout of the campaign and help the Saints improve to 2-2.
Maryville and Cedarville each finished with 11 shots and four shots on goal, while the Saints held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints generated the first scoring opportunity in the fifth minute when
Lukas Molander forced a save.
Petter Hansen followed with an attempt wide left before
Enzo Manga Mbassa tested the goalkeeper in the 22nd minute.
Maryville controlled much of the opening half, outshooting Cedarville 6-3 and earning five corner kicks, but the match remained scoreless at halftime.
Cedarville put its first shot on goal in the 56th minute, but Vidisson made the save to preserve the shutout.
Sousa Rodrigues broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, scoring an unassisted goal on a free kick to put the Saints ahead 1-0.
Cedarville looked for an equalizer, forcing another Vidisson save in the 68th minute. Just over a minute later, Cilic doubled the Maryville advantage with an unassisted tally, sprinting down the field and winning a one-on-one opportunity for his first of the year.Â
Vidisson added two more saves over the final 12 minutes to secure the 2-0 victory.
