Shane Herschelman returns for his second year as a coach at Maryville after playing for the Saints from 2010-2014 and one year as an assistant at William Woods. Herschelman will again guide the pitchers for the 2017 season.
Herschelman’s Maryville staff was led Robbie Gordon who would throw the first perfect game in program history against Hillsdale College and become National Pitcher of the Week. Gordon would also become the first Saints baseball player ever taken in the MLB amateur draft in June. The 2016 staff broke the school record for strikeouts in a season. The pitching staff would have a 2.5 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio as well.
In 2015, Heschelman helped guide William Woods played in the national tournament after receiving an at large bid to the NAIA championships. The Owls finished the year ranked 24th in the country and tied a program record for wins with 39. The pitching staff finished the year with a 2.63 ERA which ranked 2nd in the country while holding opponents to a .221 average.
Herschelman is the Saints all-time leader for appearances as a pitcher both in a season and for a career.
VonBehren on Herschelman:
“Hersch cares about this program and the process to building it more than anyone. He played a great deal here and graduated from Maryville. His pride in the program shows in how hard he works to make sure our pitchers are put in the best situation we can give them to gain knowledge and strength.”
