Tyrone Johnson enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Maryville University men’s basketball program for the 2019-20 campaign.
“I am excited to have Tyrone join our staff as he checked all the boxes in what we were looking for in a new assistant coach,” Saints head coach Marc Stricker said. “Ty brings great energy, personality, and work ethic to our program. Coach Johnson is a relationship guy and comes highly recommended from a lot of veteran coaches in the coaching world.”
Johnson brings experience in the Great Lakes Valley Conference after spending the 2018-19 season at the University of Illinois Springfield. In Johnson’s only season with the Prairie Stars, they finished .500 after completing back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in school history since becoming an NCAA institution.
Prior to UIS, Johnson started his coaching career as an assistant at the NJCAA level with stops at South Suburban College, Daley College, and Lincoln College. During his tenure, Johnson’s teams were ranked as high as No. 1 in the country. He has coached two All-Americans, one Player of the Year and five All-League players. Johnson has graduated more than 90 percent of the student athletes under his supervision.
The Chicago native was a manager at Illinois State under Tim Jankovich in 2011-12 when the Redbirds finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference. Johnson graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management at Lincoln College.
