Derek Zuniga

Maryville University Head Men’s Soccer Coach David Korn announced Derek Zuniga as an assistant coach before the 2016 season.

In his time as an assistant, Zuniga has helped the Saints reach new heights including five consecutive bids to the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships, three Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championships, a 2022 GLVC Regular Season Championship, and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2019.

He has also helped coach three major Great Lakes Valley Conference award winners, four All-Americans, 17 United Soccer Coaches All-Region players, and 34 All-Conference selections.

Zuniga came to Maryville after serving for two years with the Canton Akron Soccer Club. He organized team scheduling for the OYSAN State League as well as coordinated a youth summer camp for more than 90 players. Zuniga worked as CAK’s individual coach/personal trainer for more than 20 club players. Zuniga worked the fall 2014 season for Metro FC Soccer Club and worked for the team’s youth squads.
 
As a player at Wright State, Zuniga started all four years and served as team captain for three seasons. He helped the Raiders reach the 2011 Horizon League Tournament championship game and was a second-team All-Horizon League player in 2012. Zuniga was selected as Wright State’s Most Valuable Player in 2013. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from WSU in December 2015.

As a prep player in Massillon Jackson High School, Zuniga was a 2009 NSCAA High School All-American and voted first-team All-Ohio. He was named the Federal League Player of the Year as a senior and helped the team win the conference title. Zuniga also earned Stark County and Northeast District Player of the Year honors. In the 2007 season, he helped his team reach the State Championship game. Zuniga captained two seasons for the Cleveland Internationals Academy squads on the U16 and U18 teams.
