Dave Thurmer begins his fourth year as an assistant coach at Maryville. He was the athletic director and soccer coach at Duchesne High School in St. Charles, Mo., for a total of 33 years. He coached boys soccer for 32 years, 31 seasons as the head coach. Thurmer became the assistant coach for the girls soccer team when the program started in 1985 and held that position until 1995. He was appointed the head girls soccer coach in 1995 and held that position until I retired in 2013. Thurmer was appointed the school's athletics director in 1993 and held that position until 2013.
During his coaching tenure, Duchesne won two boys and two girls Missouri State Soccer Championships. Thurmer guided the soccer teams to 14 Missouri State Final Fours. He coached more than one hundred boys and girls all-state players and multiple Missouri State Players of the Year in boys and girls soccer.
Thurmer was awarded the Missouri State Coach of the Year award four times and named the NSCAA Girls National Coach of the Year in 2009. In 2004, he earned the prestigious Jimmy Dunn Award by the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame. When Thurmer retired from coaching high school, he was 10th in wins for girls soccer, 10th in wins for boys, and fourth on the all time list of coaches who coached both boys and girls soccer in Missouri.
