Despite 19 kills from
Laura Welling and 32 digs from
Jamie Kloss, the Maryville volleyball team was edged 3-2 by Walsh to open the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Ill. Set scores were 25-16, 18-25, 25-23, 19-25, 10-15.
The Saints enjoyed one of their best hitting sets of the season as they registered a .382 hitting percentage to win the opening set 25-16. After the Cavaliers tied the match in set two, the Saints surged ahead to hold off Walsh 25-23 in the third set. However, the Cavaliers responded again to tie the match by winning set four.
In the final set,
Mikaela Lahm had Maryville’s first two points on kills for a 2-1 lead before Walsh scored four straight to take a 5-2 lead. Welling terminated a shot to break the run, but the Cavaliers took command with the next four points.
Hana Michael twice had kills to draw Maryville to within four but that would be as close as the Saints would get.
Kloss’ 32 digs tied for the fifth-most in a match in program history and are the most since Samantha Bock finished with 37 digs Oct. 2, 2009. Welling finished with 19 kills, the most by a Maryville player this season and completed a double-double with 16 digs. Lahm added 15 kills , while Michael also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
Taryn Trubich dished out a season-best 51 assists.
