Volleyball Saints Rally to Defeat Kentucky Wesleyan

After dropping the first two sets against Kentucky Wesleyan, the Maryville volleyball team roared all the way back to win a five-set Great Lakes Valley Conference thriller 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-11. Mikaela Lahm led the comeback with 16 kills while hitting .387 for the match and tallying a season-high eight blocks.
 
The visiting Panthers took the first two sets as the Maryville offense was getting untracked in the third. The score was tied 12-12 before a Lahm sparked a 4-0 burst with three straight kills. A KWC hitting error gave the Saints a 16-12 lead. Kentucky Wesleyan slowly crept closer and pulled to within one at 22-21. Samantha Callahan notched a kill and two straight hitting errors by KWC handed Maryville a 25-21 decision.
 
Maryville trailed in the fourth set 10-7 before a Hana Michael kill keyed three straight points. Taryn Trubich served an ace, and a block by Michael and Lahm was good for a 10-7 lead. The Panthers stayed close and tied the game at 16-16. After a KWC serving error gave the Saints the lead, Michael pounded down two straight kills. The Saints still led 23-20 before KWC scored three of the next four points to close to 24-23. Laura Welling finished a pass from Trubich as the Saints held on 25-23 to force a decisive fifth set.
 
The Panthers jumped out to a 6-3 lead until the Saints received kills from Lahm and Michael. KWC rebuilt a 9-6 lead before the Saints answered with two straight points on a Welling kill and block by Julia Greaves and Callahan. Still down 10-8, Maryville pieced together four straight points to bolt ahead. A KWC error and a service ace by Jamie Kloss tied the set at 10-10. Greaves gave the Saints the lead with a kill, and a Panthers hitting miscue made the score 12-10. KWC scored its final point to pull to 12-11 before the Saints finished the match by scoring three in a row. The Panthers had a hitting error, and Michael drilled her 14th kill of the night. At match point, Trubich served her fourth ace to close out the sparkling comeback.
 
Michael completed a double-double by adding 15 digs to her 14 kills to go along with five blocks. Welling notched 13 kills, while Kloss finished with 20 digs, the second most by a Saint this season. Trubich also finished with a double-double on 38 assists and 15 digs. Chelsea Brothers and Ashley Smith led four KWC players in double-figure kills with 13. Morgan Watson was outstanding for the Panthers with a match-high 28 digs.

The Saints improve to 4-19 overall, 2-8 in the GLVC. The Panthers drop to 9-16 overall, 2-8 in the league. Maryville will look to make it two straight as it takes on Southern Indiana Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest.
