The Maryville women’s soccer team exploded for five goals to post a 5-4 victory over Illinois Springfield in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon in St. Louis. The contest marked the first time the Saints scored five goals in a game since a 5-0 win over Saint Joseph’s Sept. 6, 2009.

After 44 minutes without a goal, Kelsey Barkley collected a pass from Sam Kruse and slotted the ball into the UIS net at the 44:05 mark of the first half for a 1-0 Saints advantage. Just after intermission, Maryville struck again when Katy Rood took a pass from Shannon Foley and rifled a shot into the upper 90 to double the lead 53 seconds after halftime. The score would prove to be the first of eight second-half goals. The Prairie Stars drew one goal back when Erin Egolf scored a little more than three minutes later to make it 2-1.

The Saints answered with two more goals in quick succession. Sam Poteet took a free kick from distance and placed it into the lower right side of the visitor’s goal for a 3-1 Maryville lead in the 54th minute. The combo of Foley to Katy Rood worked again at the 55:20 mark when Rood took another pass and lofted the shot into the upper right and a seemingly comfortable 4-1 lead. Carin Fearing tallied for UIS just over two minutes later to pull the Prairie Stars to 4-2.

After picking up two assists, Foley tallied what would prove to be the game winner. Meghin Moynihan and Cydney Robertson connected consecutive passes, and Foley ran onto the ball and put the shot into the lower left side for a 5-2 at 58:40. The Prairie Stars attempted to rally as Egolf scored two more goals in the final 20 minutes, the last in the 87th minute, to complete a hat trick as UIS (3-11-2, 2-11-1 GLVC) edged to 5-4. The Maryville defense made the one-goal margin stand as the Saints improved to 4-9-4 overall, 3-7-4 in the GLVC.

Rood finished with two goals, and Foley had the game-winning goal and two assists. Seven different Saints players recorded at least one point on the day. Maryville closes out the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 24, with a contest at Missouri-St. Louis.
