Drury Holds Off Saints in Volleyball Play

The Maryville Saints challenged Drury but fell short 25-17, 26-24, 25-22 Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match in Springfield, Mo.
 
The Saints took their first lead of the day 4-3 after a Drury hitting error, but the Panthers scored the next four points. Trailing 10-6, Samantha Callahan notched two straight kills to cut the deficit in half. The teams traded points and Maryville closed to 12-10 on a kill by Taryn Trubich. Drury responded with three unanswered points to take a 15-10 lead they would not surrender for a 25-17 victory.
 
In set two, Maryville was down 7-4 but charged back to take a 9-8 lead after a kill by Demi Maniaci. The Panthers answered to rebuild a 16-12 lead before the Saints rallied again. Trubich had a kill, and Hana Michael served an ace. After a Drury hitting miscue, Jamie Kloss had a kill to knot the set at 16. The Panthers recovered and slowly pulled back to a 23-20 lead. The Saints reeled off four straight points, capped by two straight Maniaci kills, to earn a set point. However, Drury scored three straight points to win the set 26-24.
 
The Saints sprinted out to an early 4-0 lead in set one behind the strong service game of Kelsey Warden. Drury scored two straight points, but Maryville tacked on a 3-0 burst to build a 7-2 margin. The Panthers snuck back to 7-6 before the Saints retook an 11-6 cushion. Kloss’ kill at 13-7 gave the Saints their biggest lead of the day, and Maryville still led 15-9 after a Drury service error. Drury inched back into the set and forged a tie at 17. Trubich had another kill to give the Saints the lead, and Maryville was still leading 19-18 after a Panthers mistake. Drury managed three straight points to retake the lead for the final time and held on for a 25-22 win.
 
Maniaci led the Saints (4-22 overall, 2-11 GLVC) with eight kills, while Trubich had an outstanding overall match with 19 assists, 12 digs and six kills. Michael tied for match high honors with 14 digs. Alex Smith led Drury (13-14, 5-8 GLVC) with 17 kills.
