Saints Outblock UMSL But Fall Short in Road GLVC Match

The Maryville University volleyball team out-blocked the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ 7-to-1 but the visitors fell short in three sets 25-15, 27-25, 25-15 at the Mark Twain Building.
 
The Tritons scored the first three points of the match before Mikaela Lahm had a kill. She teamed with Hana Michael on a block to pull the Saints to 3-2. UMSL scored three straight points before Julia Greaves recorded her first kill to pull the Saints to 6-3. Lahm and Greaves had a stuff block to draw Maryville to 7-4 before the Tritons used a 9-1 run to build a double-digit lead. The Saints reeled off five straight points capped by a service ace by Jamie Kloss to pull to within 21-14. UMSL closed out the set by scoring four of the last five points for a 25-15 win.
 
Kloss had a kill and Lahm recorded a solo block as the Saints forced a 2-2 tie early in set two. After an UMSL service error, Demi Maniaci’s kill pulled Maryville to 5-4. The Tritons tallied three straight points before Graves and Taryn Trubich notched back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 8-6. Trailing by six, Samantha Callahan had a kill to begin a 3-0 run as the Saints pulled to within 13-10. The Saints stayed close until the Tritons reached set point 24-19. The Saints then responded with six straight points. Michael and Greaves had kills, followed by an ace by Trubich. After a Lahm kill, Trubich’s ace gave the Saints their first lead at 25-24. However, the Tritons scored three straight points to escape with a 27-25 lead.
 
Michael started set three with two consecutive kills to give Maryville a 2-1 lead. After UMSL led 3-2, the Saints recorded three straight kills as Greaves sandwiched two around one by Lahm for a 5-3 Maryville lead. A block by the combo of Lahm and Greaves restored the Saints edge at 6-4. Greaves’ kill broke a 6-6 tie but the Tritons reeled off eight straight points to retake the lead. The Saints got as close as 20-13 on a Maniaci kill but the Tritons held on 25-15.
 
Maniaci led the Saints with eight kills, while Trubich recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs. Michael finished with a team-high 15 digs. Maryville is now 4-23, 2-12 in the GLVC, and the Tritons improve to 11-15, 8-6 in the conference.
