Maryville Runs Past Blackburn in Season Opener as Duethman Leads with 20 Points

Senior forward Abby Duethman scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Maryville women’s basketball team defeated Blackburn 96-22 Sunday afternoon in Moloney Arena. The Saints defense did not allow Blackburn to score in the second half as the Beavers missed all 21 shots from the field and did not attempt a free throw.
 
Blackburn scored the first two points of the game on a Briana Rae layup before the Saints tallied five straight. Kate Childs hit a 3-pointer, and Shelby Miller converted a short jumper for a 5-2 Maryville lead. Rashonsa Willis made a layup for the visitors to cut the gap to 5-4. The Saints went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game. Miller drilled a 3-pointer, and Brittnye McSparron had a steal and drove in for a layup to start the run. Abby Duethman scored eight straight points for the Saints with two 3-pointers and a layup. Erica Lorton sank two free throws to close the run for a 20-4 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half.
 
Kylie Sparks scored for Blackburn to end the Maryville run, but the Saints tallied 10 unanswered points to build a 30-6 lead at the 8:40 mark. Maryville led by as many as 34 points before taking a 51-22 lead at halftime.
 
After intermission, the Saints defense did not allow Blackburn to score. The Saints tallied 45 points in the second half as all 13 Maryville players who played in the game registered at least two points.
 
Duethman hit nine-of-12 shots en route to her 20 points, while adding two assists and three steals. Miller sank three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, five assists and four steals. McSparron added 12 points and five steals.  For Blackburn, Willis led the visitors with 11 points, and Rae had a team-high eight rebounds. Maryville finished with 25 steals and it forced Blackburn into 41 turnovers.
 
The Saints return to action Saturday, Nov. 17, when they host Missouri Western in a 6 p.m. start at Moloney Arena.
