Saints Rally to Force Fifth Set But Fall Short at UIS

The Maryville volleyball team came back to force a decisive fifth set but fell short in its quest as the Prairie Stars posted a 3-2 win Friday in Springfield, Ill. UIS won the match 25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 21-25, 15-9. Hana Michael recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs, and Jamie Kloss came up with a match-high 25 digs to pace the Saints.
 
The trailed in the deciding set 4-3 before Hana Michael pounded down two kills. A finish by Demi Maniaci gave the Saints a 6-5 advantage before UIS scored seven straight points to take control 12-6. Julia Greaves’ kill got the Saints back on track but the Prairie Stars kept Maryville at bay. Laura Welling had two straight kills to extend the match but UIS closed out the match 15-9
 
Taryn Trubich and Mikaela Lahm opened the match with kills to five the Saints an early lead. After a UIS hitting error gave the Saints a 3-1 lead, the Prairie Stars scored seven straight points to take the lead. The home team kept the advantage at 23-15 before the Saints made a late push. Maniaci’s kill started a 5-0 run for Maryville which was capped by Trubich’s kill at 23-20. The Prairie Stars righted themselves and held off the Maryville charge at 25-21.
 
UIS scored the first two points of set two before a Prairie Stars error and a kill by Welling tied the score 2-2. Another Welling kill drew Maryville to 4-3 but UIS scored four straight points. Michael recorded back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 8-5 until UIS used a 4-1 burst to take an edge. The Saints got as close as 17-11 but the Prairie Stars went on for a 25-14 win.
 
In the third set, the Saints held an early 7-6 cushion before scoring three straight points. Samantha Callahan started the run will a kill, Greaves terminated and a Michael ace gave Maryville a 10-6 lead. The Saints took their biggest lead of the set at 14-9 after a UIS error. The Prairie Stars answered with a 7-0 to move back ahead. Maryville tied the set at 17, and things were tied four more times, including the last time at 24-24. Michael came up big for the Saints with consecutive kills as Maryville extended the match with a 26-24 lead.
 
Set four was tied at 9-9 before UIS surged ahead with five straight points. The Saints rallied after a Lahm kill, UIS error and a Kelsey Warden ace cut the deficit to 16-13. Still down 18-15, the Saints roared back with five straight points to inch out to a 20-18 advantage. The set was tied at 21-21 before the Saints reeled off the last four points capped by a Welling kills to win 25-21.
 
Lahm hit .400 for the match and had 12 kills, while Welling added 11 digs. Trubich finished with 22 assists and eight digs. Sara Baker led UIS with 19 kills.
 
The Saints stand at 4-24 overall, 2-13 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars improve to 10-17, 2-13 in the league. Maryville plays its final road match of the season Saturday at Quincy.
