The Maryville women’s basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 66-58 loss at Florida Southern Sunday afternoon in Lakeland, Fla. The Moccasins, who earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament last year, used a late 11-2 run that proved to be the difference.

The Saints jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers by Shelby Miller and Kate Childs. The Moccasins closed to 10-6 but Maryville stayed in front after two free throws by Abby Duethman and a layup by Erica Lorton for a 14-6 lead. The Saints still were up 17-12 after a Duethman trey, but FSC scored eight of the next 10 points to take its first lead of the day. The Saints went back up 24-20 on a Brittnye McSparron bucket and another Duethman 3-pointer. Florida Southern eventually forged a 31-31 tie at halftime.

The Moccasins used a 9-2 run after halftime to surge ahead. Hoops by McSparron and Duethman cut the Saints deficit to just 40-37 four minutes into the second half. FSC edged back ahead and slowly built a 50-42 advantage with 12 minutes left to go. Maryville’s deficit stood at 52-45 before forcing a tie with seven straight points. Miller began the run with a 3-pointer, and Duethman and McSparron scored consecutive layups to tie the contest with 8:54 to play. However, Florida Southern went on an 11-2 run to seize control of the game. McSparron sank a jumper, and Duethman converted two free throws as the Saints got as close as five points but the Moccasins held on for the win.

Duethman led the Saints (5-4) with 16 points and five steals. Childs added 13 points, while Miller chipped in 12 points. Lorton led Maryville with six rebounds. Taylor Maldonado topped the Moccasins (6-4) with 16 points.

The Saints return to action Thursday, Jan. 3, when they travel to Kentucky Wesleyan in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
