The Maryville women’s basketball team opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 73-64 road victory at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday evening in north St. Louis. The Saints pulled out to a 16-point lead late in the second half and kept the Tritons at bay to improve to 4-3 overall, 1-0 in the GLVC.
Leading 32-24 at halftime,
Brittnye McSparron hit a jumper to build a double-digit lead. The Tritons scored two straight hoops and got as close as 34-28. The Saints answered with a 6-0 run.
Kate Childs hit a jumper, and
Abby Duethman drained a long 3-pointer from the top of the key. McSparron sank one free throw for a 40-28 lead with 15:58 to play. The Tritons crawled back into the game and cut the gap to 44-39 three minutes later. Maryville still led 51-44 before taking charge with a 12-3 burst.
Kayla Person drove the lane for a layup, and McSparron sank two from the line. Person stole the ball and cruised in for a layup and a 59-46 advantage.
The Tritons made one more push and cut their deficit to 63-56 with just over three minutes left to play.
Shelby Miller swished a long 3-pointer from the right side to rebuild a double-digit lead at 66-56. The Saints hit five of six free throws down the stretch and pulled out their third straight win.
McSparron led the Saints with 19 points, while Duethman added 18 and a team-high seven rebounds. Childs chipped in 12 points, and Person finished with 10. Devonna Smith led UMSL (3-2, 0-1) with 23 points and nine rebounds.
