The Maryville University women’s basketball team used a 15-2 run midway through the second half to post a 75-59 victory at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday evening in the Great Lakes Valley Conference finale. The victory gave the Saints the No. 6 seed for the upcoming SCHEELS GLVC Women’s Basketball Tournament. Maryville will again play UMSL, this time at Moloney Arena, Sunday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m.
The Saints took a 32-25 lead at halftime, but the Tritons scored the first six points after the break to close to 32-31 with 18:25 to play.
JoAnn Thompson and
Shelby Miller scored back-to-back buckets for rebuild the teal to 36-31. A three-point play by UMSL cut the lead to just two, but
Abby Duethman drained a 3-pointer to start Maryville’s big run.
Kate Childs scored a hoop to push the edge to 41-34 until the Tritons scored to close to within five points. Duethman converted a drive on the left side before
Alissa Oney took over for Maryville. She drained a long 3-pointer to build a double-digit lead at 46-36, then had a three-point play. Oney scored on a layup as the Saints went up 51-36 with 13:26 remaining in the contest. UMSL got as close as 11 points, but Duethman scored a basket and added two free throws. Maryville’s lead grew as much as 18 points as they cruised to the road win. The Saints shot 57.1 percent in the second half (16-of-28) to pull away.
Duethman recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Saints. Miller added 16 points and set a new freshman season for points with 313 points. Oney and
Rita Flynn finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Kelly Carter led UMSL (10-16, 5-13) with a game-high 26 points. Maryville forced UMSL into 24 turnovers and held the Tritons to 38.5 percent shooting.
The Saints improve to 15-11 overall, 11-7 in the league.
