For the second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader, the Maryville baseball team split as the Saints dropped game one at Kentucky Wesleyan 3-1 but bounced back to win the second contest 4-2.
The Panthers opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Aaron reached on a fielder’s choice, and Mike Wilkinson drew a walk to start the rally for the Saints. Andrew Naegeli lashed a single to drive what would be Maryville’s only run. KWC added a run in the fifth to stretch its lead to 3-1. Bryce Bastien walked and Jared Green followed with a single. Kyle Kinyon put down a sac bunt to push two Saints into scoring position. However, Maryville could not drive in a run. The Saints had one more opportunity in the seventh but Wilkinson was stranded at third as the Panthers held on for the win.
In the second game, the teams traded scores until the Saints broke through and shutdown the Panthers late. In the top of the first, Bastien singled and Nick Little’s sacrifice bunt allowed Wilkinson to drive home the first run. KWC answered with a run in the home half of the first. The Saints struck again in the third when Zach Bradford reached on an error, and Bastien tripled him home for a 2-1 Maryville lead. Again, Kentucky Wesleyan tied the game in its next at bat. Finally, the Saints charged ahead for good. Green and Corey Gall singled with one out. The duo moved up a base, and Asher’s RBI groundout put the Saints on top 3-2. Colby White then singled to push the lead to 4-2. Wilkinson, who went six innings and allowed only four hits, was followed to the mound by Gall who retired the Panthers in order to pick up the save.
The Saints improve to 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC, while Kentucky Wesleyan is now 7-7 overall, 3-1 in the league.
