Maryville baseball saw Northern Kentucky come to town and emerge with two tightly contested games Sunday afternoon at Weber Field. The Norse rallied to win game one 6-2 and held off the Saints 5-4 in the second contest.

In the opener, NKU used a solo blast to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Maryville answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Aaron Asher singled right back up the middle to start the rally, and Colby White blasted a long homer to right to put the Saints on top 2-1. After two scoreless innings, the Norse tied the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly. NKU continued its rally in the sixth as it used two hits and a Maryville error to push across three unearned runs for a 6-2 lead. Nick Little doubled in the eight to try and restart the Maryville offense, but he was stranded in scoring position and would be the last Saint to reach second as the Norse recorded the win.

In the second game, the Norse struck first with two runs in the first on a bases loaded single. The Saints responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to forge a 2-2 tie. Bryce Bastien singled, and Nick Little reached on a fielder’s choice as Bastien slid in save at second base. Mike Wilkinson reached on another fielder’s choice and pushed Bastien to third. Kyle Kinyon singled to left as the Saints cut the gap to one.  Jared Green singled sharply up the middle of the field to tie the game.

The Norse took the lead with three runs in the fifth as they used three hits to jump ahead 5-2. Maryville came right back with two scores in the bottom of the frame. Bastien doubled to right, and Little chased him home with a single. After a sac bunt, Green reached on a throwing error as Little scored to cut the Maryville deficit to 5-4. In the sixth, the Saints put two runners on as White singled and Little drew a walk, but both runners were unable to come home with the tying run. NKU retired the Saints in order to close out the game.

The Saints slip to 7-10 overall, 3-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Norse improve to 13-9, 6-2 in the GLVC.  Maryville is next in action Wednesday, March 28, as they travel to McKendree.
