A battle between pitching staffs tipped to McKendree’s favor as the Maryville baseball squad watched a ninth-inning rally fall short 2-1 Wednesday in Lebanon, Ill.
Down 2-0 heading to the top of the ninth, Jared Green began the Saints rally with a single to center. He moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Andrew Naegeli pushed Green up one more base with another single. Mike Wilkinson lashed an RBI single to right to bring the Saints to within one run as Green scored. With runners at the corners, the Saints had the go-ahead run on the base path with one down. However, Maryville hit into a game-ending double play as the Bearcats narrowly escaped with the win.
Green, who started the game on the mound for the Saints, worked four innings and gave up just three hits. Matt Staback threw one frame and also kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard. In the seventh inning, McKendree used three hits and stole a base to push across its only two runs of the game. With the bases loaded, Brandon Gargus had a two-out hit, which would prove to be the game winner.
Nick Little and Colby White both had two hits apiece as the Saints fell to 7-11 on the season. McKendree won its eight game of the year. Maryville returns to GLVC action this weekend as it hosts William Jewell for a four-game series.
