In its inaugural NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament appearance, the Maryville women fell short against the No. 2 team in the nation and Midwest Region host squad Ashland 87-62 Friday evening in Ashland, Ohio. The Saints, who won the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, finish their season with a 19-12. The Eagles have won 29 straight games and are now 29-1.
Rita Flynn powered inside off an Abby Duethman feed to put the Saints on top 2-0. Ashland tied the game but JoAnn Thompson, playing in her home state of Ohio, sank a 3-pointer to give the Saints a 5-2 lead just over three minutes into the contest. However, the Saints began to misfire and the Eagles went on to score 19 straight points. The Saints finally ended the dry spell when Brittany Fish rattled in a 3-pointer, and Kate Childs followed with a long jumper from the right wing. Childs scored later to keep the Saints within distance at 25-12. Ashland led by 17 before back-to-back scores by Erica Lorton and Breann Baker drew Maryville to within 33-20 with 4:40 left in the first half. The Eagles settled for a 47-25 lead at intermission. Childs scored to open the second half as the Saints trimmed the gap to 47-27 but they would not get any closer as Maryville’s season-best five-game winning streak came to an end.
Thompson led Maryville with 15 points and chipped in six rebounds, while Lorton added 10 points. Abby Duethman topped the Saints with seven rebounds. Jena Stutzman led Ashland with 29 points as the Eagles shot 52.3 percent from the field.
