Maryville battled William Jewell in a doubleheader Sunday to close out a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Saints trailed early in game one and saw their rally fall short 14-9, but used the momentum from the late rush carry over to game two where they registered a 6-4 triumph.

The Cardinals batted around in the third inning and flew out to an 8-0 lead. The Saints started their comeback by replying with three runs in their next at bat. Colby White and Nick Little started the home half of the third with back-to-back singles. Andrew Naegeli doubled in Maryville’s first run, and Jared Green’s RBI grounder tacked on the Saints’ second run. Kyle Kinyon plated the third run of the frame as the Saints closed to 8-3. William Jewel rebuilt its lead with three runs in the fourth and a single tally in the fifth.

The Saints put up another furious rally with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Naegeli and Green had lead off singles, and Kinyon doubled them both home. Corey Gall smacked a single to drive in another run. White, who went 4-for-4, continued the offensive charge with a double. Little had a single to centerfield to drive in Gall as Maryville closed to 12-8. The Cardinals added two more insurance runs in the sixth. The Saints again tried to answer as Naegeli doubled for his fourth hit of the contest, and Green singled to put runners in scoring position. Kinyon, who finished with four RBIs in the game, lofted a sac fly as the Saints again cut into their deficit at 14-9, but that would be as close as Maryville would get.

The Saints had their first four batters in game two all reach and score as Maryville quickly roared out to a 4-0 lead. Little doubled, and Naegeli followed with a hit. Green drew a walk to load the bases, and Kinyon worked another free pass to put the Saints on the scoreboard. Gall drove in the second run with an RBI groundout, and White doubled in two more runs as the Saints burst to a 4-0 advantage.

Naegeli doubled in the bottom of the second, and Green’s RBI single put the Saints ahead 5-0. William Jewell chipped away at the lead with two runs in the third, and a single score in the sixth frame. The Cardinals added another run in the eighth to trim Maryville’s lead to 5-4. WJC was still threatening until Kinyon nailed a Cardinal base runner who had strayed too far away from third base to end the rally. The Saints tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as they used two hits and took advantage of two WJC fielding miscues for a 6-4 lead. In their final at bat, William Jewell put base runners on the corners, but Gall induced a fly out to end the game and pick up his second save of the season.

Naegeli finished Sunday with six hits in nine at bats and score five times, while Kinyon drove in five runs during the doubleheader. The Saints improve to 8-14 overall, 4-8 in the GLVC. The Cardinals stand at 11-13, 4-8 in conference. Maryville returns to action Tuesday as the Saints head to UMSL to take on the Tritons for a doubleheader.
