Playing a makeup doubleheader after the original games were washed out due to rain, the Maryville Saints split a doubleheader against visiting Illinois Springfield Tuesday afternoon. UIS took game one 5-2, while Maryville triumphed in the second game 4-1. The Saints continue Great Lakes Valley Conference action Wednesday when they host UMSL for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
The Prairie Stars scored single runs in the third and fourth before pushing their advantage with three runs in the fifth. The Saints took advantage of an error to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Colby White singled to right, and Nick Little shot a ball through the left side of the UIS defense to load the bases. Andrew Naegeli delivered a clutch two-out single to draw the Saints to 5-2. A passed ball put two Maryville runners in scoring position, but the rally was cut short. Maryville put a runner aboard in each of the next three innings but was unable to cut into UIS lead as the Prairie Stars held off the Saints.
Game two saw the Saints surge early and hold off a late attempt by UIS. Maryville gained the upper hand in the bottom of the third with three runs. After a UIS error put the leadoff runner on, Bryce Bastien put down a bunt single, and both runners moved up a base on a ground out. Corey Gall lashed a sharp single through the right side of the UIS infield for the first run of the game. Kyle Kinyon drilled an RBI double to right center as Maryville went ahead 2-0. Bob Miller plated the final run of the outburst with a deep grounder to shortstop and a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning, UIS committed two straight errors before Bastien made the Prairie Stars pay with an RBI single to right field. Bastien ended the game with three hits, and RBI and scored a run.
The Saints nearly took a 5-0 lead but made an aggressive play and had a runner thrown out at the plate. UIS finally touched Maryville starter Brett Hancock for a run in the sixth inning to cut its deficit to 4-1. The Prairie Stars (7-27, 1-19 GLVC) eventually loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but Patrick Jacobs kept UIS from scoring as he picked up the save. Hancock gave up just the one run and struck out five while not issuing a walk to record the victory for the Saints. Maryville improved to 10-21, 6-14 in the GLVC.
