The Maryville baseball team looked to end the longest winning streak as it hosted crosstown rival University of Missouri-St. Louis, but instead the Tritons won both ends of a doubleheader to run its streak to eight. UMSL took game one 13-4 and held on to take the second tilt 3-2 despite the Saints outhitting the Tritons nine to seven.
UMSL scored three runs in the top of the first to take the early game one lead. The Saints responded with a single tally in the bottom of the frame. Andrew Naegeli singled to start the rally, and Jared Green had and infield hit. Corey Gall smashed an RBI single up the middle to get Maryville on the scoreboard. However, the Tritons scored in each of the next four innings to reach double figures. The Saints put on a late rally as Nick Little picked up an RBI single, and Naegeli drove in two more runs but that would be as close as Maryville would get.
The Tritons started game two quickly with one run in the first and two more in the second. After the first two innings, Saints pitcher Mike Wilkinson kept UMSL off balance and did not allow another run. The Saints then struck back for a tally in the fourth inning. Gall singled to right field and took second on a wild pitch. After a grounder moved him to third, Gall dashed home on another wild pitch to get Maryville on the scoreboard. Maryville continued its comeback with another run in the fifth. Little reached on a fielder’s choice and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Bryce Bastien drilled a single to center as the Saints pulled to within one at 3-2.
Maryville was poised to tie the game but left the bases loaded. In the eighth, Colby White launched a long triple off the center field fence to create another golden scoring chance, but he was stranded there. The Saints kept coming and again pushed the game-tying run to third in the ninth inning. Naegeli singled to center, and Bastien followed with another base hit. UMSL tried to pick off Bastien at first but the throw sailed wide and Naegeli dashed to third. However, the Tritons had a force play at second just barely beating Bastien to the base to end the game. Wilkinson was outstanding on the mound for the Saints and surrendered only two earned runs and recorded six strikeouts. Reliever Eric Keling came on in the ninth and notched three straight strikeouts, all looking.
The Saints fall to 10-23 overall, 6-16 in the GLVC. UMSL improves to 19-16, 11-11 in the conference.
