Maryville and Quincy battled to the end in a baseball doubleheader Saturday in Quincy, Ill., but the Hawks narrowly edged the Saints 5-4 and 5-3.
The Hawks struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first until the Saints responded with two scores in the second. With the bases loaded, Corey Gall lifted a sac fly to score Kyle Kinyon with Maryville’s first run. Mike Wilkinson, who reached via a walk, scored on a Quincy error to pull the Saints to within one. Maryville tied the game when Bryce Bastien doubled down the left field line, and Wilkinson drove him in with a single. Quincy took the lead with a run in the fourth before both pitching staffs settled down. The Saints loaded the bases in the eighth, and Colby White’s walk forced in the game-tying run. However, Quincy won the game with a sac fly in the bottom of the ninth to claim the first game.
The Saints struck for two runs to start the finale. Andrew Naegeli singled, and Bastien doubled to left for a 1-0 lead. After a ground out pushed Bastien to third, Jared Green’s RBI single handed Maryville a 2-0 lead. Quincy scored one run in its next two at-bats to tie the game before the Saints retook the lead in the third. Kinyon doubled to third and took third on a wild pitch. Wilkinson’s sac fly then handed the Saints a 3-2 advantage. Quincy pushed across two runs for its first lead of the second game and sealed the win with a single score in the fifth inning. Naegeli singled to start the seventh as the Saints attempted to rally but the Hawks held on for the victory.
The Saints slide to 10-25 overall, 6-18 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks improve to 20-16, 13-9 in the league. The teams will close out the series with two games Sunday.
