Maryville came up short in its bid to sweep Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday. The Saints took game one 4-2 but the Hawks emerged with a 4-0 victory in the series finale.
In the first game, the Saints scored one run in four different innings and rode a strong pitching from Kolby O’Dowd for the triumph. Andrew Naegeli singled and swiped second base in the top of the first. He took third on a passed ball and scored on yet another passed ball to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. Corey Gall doubled leading off the second inning and moved to third on a Jared Green’s sac bunt. Colby White drilled an RBI single up the middle for a 2-0 cushion. Quincy got a run back in the bottom of the second, but the Saints scored the eventual game winner in the fifth. Naegeli started the frame with a single, and he moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A fielder’s choice pushed Naegeli to third, and Mike Wilkinson’s sacrifice fly gave the Saints a 3-1 lead. After the Hawks scored an unearned run in the fifth to draw to 3-2, Maryville tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Daniel Barnett was hit by a pitch, and Nick Little had a single. Naegeli struck again with an RBI single and the final 4-2 margin. He finished the game going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. O’Dowd picked up the win after allowing just five hits and one earned run in five innings of work. Eric Keling retired the final two outs to pick up the save.
The Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the first for what would prove to be the only scores of game two. Quincy had a hit batsman and received two walks before Aaron Priestes hit a grand slam. The game settled into a pitcher’s duel as both teams accounted for just seven hits, with only four coming after the first inning. Maryville’s best scoring chance might have occurred in the first when Naegeli singled, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a grounder. However, he was stranded there to end the threat. In the top of the third, Zach Bradford was hit by a pitch and moved up after consecutive ground outs, but he too was still standing at third base when the inning ended. Maryville starter Jared Green only gave up three hits in six innings of work with four strikeouts, while Cory Hermann did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.
The Saints stand at 11-26 overall, 7-19 in the GLVC. Maryville travels to Truman State Tuesday to play a rescheduled doubleheader. The Saints return to GLVC action Wednesday when they host Illinois Springfield for two games at Weber Field beginning at 3 p.m.
