Playing its last nonconference games of the season, the Maryville baseball team was downed in both ends of a doubleheader at Truman State. The Bulldogs edged the Saints 2-1 in game one and took the second contest 8-3.
In game one, Maryville starter Brandon Sarkissian and Steve Herschelman combined to allow just three hits but Truman State squeezed out a 2-1 victory. The Saints took the lead in the top of the fourth. Bryce Bastien singled to left field and advanced on an error. Jared Green singled to move Bastien over to third. Colby White delivered an RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 Maryville lead.
Sarkissian did not surrender a hit until the fourth inning giving up his only tally on a solo home run. The Saints put runners aboard in the fifth and sixth but were unable to push across the go-ahead run. In the sixth, the Bulldogs manufactured the go-ahead run for a 2-1 lead. Nick Little drew a walk to open the top of the seventh, but he was erased on a double play as Truman State held on for the win.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. The Saints responded with a run in the top of the second inning. Bastien singled and stole second to move into scoring position. As in the first game, White again delivered a run scoring single as the Saints pulled even at 1-1. However, Truman State (17-26) retook the lead with five straight runs over the next two innings. The Saints put two runners on the basepaths in the fifth when Daniel Barnett was singled, and Andrew Naegeli was hit by a pitch but Maryville was unable to close the gap. The Saints finally broke through in the seventh when they loaded the bases. Barnett was hit by a pitch, and Little earned a walk. Mike Wilkinson singled back up the middle to put a Saints runner at every base. Corey Gall plated a run when TSU misplayed a ball, and Kaleb Depew had an RBI single, but that would be as close as the Saints would get.
The Saints are 11-28 on the season. Maryville hosts Illinois Springfield for a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Wednesday starting at 3 p.m. at Weber Field.
