Maryville’s baseball squad powered to a home doubleheader sweep over Illinois Springfield Wednesday afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints rallied to take game one 6-5 and pounded out four triples en route to a 12-4 win in game two. In the finale, Colby White became just the third Saints player in program history to record two triples in a game. White also drove in six runs in the second game, tied for the second most in school history.

After giving up three unearned runs in the top of the first, the Saints immediately answered with two runs. Nick Little walked, and Kyle Kinyon was hit by a pitch. Mike Wilkinson drilled a doubled to left to bring home one run. Later, Corey Gall reached on a fielder’s choice to drive in the second run as Maryville closed to 3-2. The Prairie Stars scored two in the top of the third to rebuild a three-run lead at 5-2, before the Saints started their rally. Maryville scored one run in the bottom of the fourth when Little’s RBI single fell just inside the foul line to score Jacob Green.

The Saints completed their comeback with three runs in the fifth inning. Kolby O’Dowd got the rally started with a double to deep left center, and he moved to third on a passed ball. Gall then worked a walk and swiped second. White’s RBI groundout cut the Saints deficit to 5-4. Zach Bradford then doubled in Gall with the game-tying score at 5-5. After UIS made a pitching change, Bryce Bastien was sent up to the plate to pinch hit, and he delivered with a sharp single back up the middle to plate Green and a 6-5 Maryville lead.  Saints starter Matt Staback set down the final six hitters in order to pick up the complete-game win while surrendering just one earned run.

In the second game, UIS scored a run in the first before the Saints answered with two in the home half of the inning. After Nick Little reached to leadoff, Andrew Naegeli walked. The duo both stole a base to reach scoring position. Kyle Kinyon lofted a sac fly to bring in one run and Naegeli scored after an errant throw. UIS tied the game 2-2 in the second before the Saints took surged ahead with three straight runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Bryce Bastien tripled and Colby White had an RBI grounder for a 3-2 Maryville advantage. In the fifth frame, after a Kinyon walk and Bastien double, White tripled in both runners for a 5-3 lead.

The Prairie Stars earned one run back in the sixth, but the Saints put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth. Naegeli had an RBI single, and Bastien was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate another run. With the sacks still juiced, White drilled his second triple in as many innings to clear the bases and hand the Saints a 10-3 cushion. After Nate Blessman hit a solo homer for UIS (8-34, 2-26 GLVC) in the top of the seventh, Maryville closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Naegeli notched the fourth triple of the game, and Jared Green plated another run with a grounder. Saints starter Mike Wilkinson earned the win after allowing only five hits and two earned runs. Patrick Jacobs worked the last three innings to notch the save.

The Saints improve to 13-28 overall, 9-19 in the GLVC. Maryville plays host to Drury for a doubleheader Saturday starting at 4 p.m.
