The Maryville baseball team twice rallied en route to posting a 6-4 victory in the first game Saturday at Rockhurst. The Hawks grabbed an early lead in the finale and earned a split on the day.
After Rockhurst scored two runs in the bottom of the first, the Saints answered with two runs in the top of the second. Jacob Green walked, took second on a sac bunt and scored on Bob Miller’s RBI single. Kolby O’Dowd walked, and Daniel Barnett doubled Miller home with the tying run. Rockhurst scored one run in the second and fourth innings to rebuild a 4-2 lead.
The Saints against responded in the fifth inning to charge back into the front. Nick Little singled and sprinted around to third on Andrew Naegeli’s single. Bryce Bastien singled to cut the gap to 4-3. Later, Naegeli scored on a balk as Maryville forced a 4-4 tie. Green then put the Saints ahead 5-4 with an RBI single back up the middle. In the seventh, Maryville manufactured an insurance run for the final margin. Little reached on an error and moved into scoring position on a Naegeli sac bunt. Little took third on a wild pitch, and Bastien singled home the run. Shane Herschelman worked five innings to pick up his first win of the season.
Maryville struck first in the series finale with an unearned run in the top of the first. Bastien reached on an error and took second on a wild pitch. Green slashed a single to right to put the Saints ahead 1-0. However, the Hawks roared back with a big offensive outburst in the bottom of the frame. Rockhurst scored 11 runs to effectively take control of the game. The Saints scored one run in the third when Naegeli was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a fielder’s choice. He reached third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
The Saints improve to 9-19 overall, 5-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks stand at 18-12 overall, 10-8 in the league. Maryville returns to action at home Wednesday, April 11, when it hosts William Woods for one game starting at 6 p.m.
