Pitcher Brett Grempler posted his second consecutive sterling outing to help Maryville earn a split at No. 19 Missouri S&T in the final contests of the 2012 season. Grempler’s three-hitter helped the Saints down the Miners 3-1 in game one, while S&T took the finale 5-0.
The Miners pushed across one run in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead in the first game, but Grempler surrendered just one hit the rest of the way. The Saints came right back to forge a tie in the fourth. Kyle Kinyon singled, and Jared Green put down a sac bunt. Colby White delivered an RBI double down the line in right for a 1-1 tie. The trio then figured in the scoring as the Saints struck for the game-winning runs. Kinyon walked, and Green again pushed Maryville’s catcher into scoring position with a sac bunt. White then drew a walk setting the stage for late-inning heroics. Bob Miller lashed a double down the right field line as the Saints took a 3-1 lead. The Missouri S&T put runners aboard in the sixth and seventh inning but Grempler held the Miners off to preserve the 3-1 win. Grempler enjoyed his second straight strong start after holding Drury to just one hit in his last start.
Game two saw the Miners again score the first run with a tally in the third but Maryville starter Zach Bradford held S&T to just one more run in 6-1/3 innings of work. The Saints had their best scoring chance in the seventh. Still down just a run, Gall had an infield single, and Kinyon singled down the line to put runners on the corners. Green then drew a walk to load the bases. However, the Saints could not bring in the game-tying run. The Miners then picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh. Maryville threatened again in the eighth when Andrew Naegeli and Nick Little recorded back-to-back singles, but were unable to dent the scoreboard. Missouri S&T sealed the win with three more runs in the eighth.
The Saints close the season with a 15-34 overall record, 11-25 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Miners improve to 31-12, 20-9 in the GLVC. Maryville more than doubled its conference win total from last season and surpassed its overall victory total by six.
