The Maryville women’s soccer team looked to open the season with two straight victories but fell short when Upper Iowa scored on a free kick to close out the Peacock Classic in Fayette, Iowa, Saturday afternoon. The Saints won a 3-2 overtime thriller Friday.
Late in the first half,
Jen Jung had Maryville’s best scoring chance when she drove a shot toward the UIU net but Amanda Smith turned the shot aside as the teams played a scoreless first half.
Cydney Robertson had another Saints goal scoring opportunity turned aside two minutes into the second half.
The host Peacocks then struck with the game-winning tally. Kelsey Taldone bent in a long free kick in the 50th minute for the lone score of the contest.
Alex Reis, who scored the game winner Friday in overtime, nearly knotted the game for the Saints but was denied as Maryville fell to 1-1 on the season. Upper Iowa improved to 2-0.
The Saints return home for their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday, Sept. 7, against McKendree, at 5 p.m.
