Despite a career-high 15 kills from
Hana Michael, the Maryville volleyball team lost a five-set thriller to Quincy in its home and Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday at Moloney Arena. The Hawks took the match 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12. The Saints return to action Saturday against Illinois Springfield in a 3 p.m. contest.
The Saints hit an amazing .607 in the first set to take the early lead 25-20, but the Hawks squared the match in the second. Maryville’s defense keyed the win in set three by holding Quincy to a match-low .045 hitting percentage in a 25-22 win. However, the Hawks rallied to take the last two sets.
In the deciding finale, the Saints held a 3-2 after a
Jamie Kloss ace. Quincy responded with four straight points before a kill from Michael drew the Saints to 6-4. The Hawks stretched their lead to 10-5 before the Saints put on a furious rally.
Julia Greaves had two straight kills to start a 4-0 Maryville run. After a Quincy miscue,
Demi Maniaci pounded down a kill as the Saints drew to 10-9. The Hawks rebuilt a 13-10 lead before a Maniaci kill and a solo block by
Laura Welling drew Maryville to 13-12. Quincy recorded a kill and closed out the match on a Maryville miscue.
Michael’s 15 kills are the most by a Maryville player this season, and
Mikaela Lahm notched 10 kills.
Hannah Seitter led the defensive efforts with 15 digs.
Samantha Callahan and Greaves both finished with three blocks apiece as Maryville out-blocked Quincy 8.0 to 6.0. Christine Williams led QU with a double-double on 12 kills and 12 digs.
Maryville sees its record dip to 1-9 overall, 0-1 in the GLVC, while Quincy improves to 6-1 overall, 1-0 in the league.
