UIS Wins in Five to Spoil Lahm's Career-High 23 Kills

Mikaela Lahm hammered down a career-high 23 kills but the Maryville volleyball squad dropped its second straight five-set match, this time Illinois Springfield posted a 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-9 decision Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena.
 
After the Prairie Stars took the first set, the Saints rebounded by hitting a match-high .297 in the second set. Maryville scored four straight points to take a 10-6 lead it would not surrender the rest of the game. The Saints stretched an 11-8 lead with a five-point burst and a comfortable 16-8 lead and eased to deadlock the match. The third set saw USI holding a 13-11 lead until the Saints reeled off a 7-0 burst to take command. Maryville had a block and five kills during the run to surge ahead 2-1.
 
In the fourth set, the Saints held a narrow lead but UIS slowly edged back and took its first lead at 14-13. With the Prairie Stars leading 18-16, the teams traded points until the Saints finally tied the set at 22-22. However, UIS scored the last three points to force a fifth set.  UIS scored the first three points of the final set and still led 6-2 before the Saints scored three straight to cut the gap to 6-5. Maryville got as close as 9-7 but UIS scored the next three points and held on for the win.
 
In addition to her 23 kills, Lahm finished with a .333 hitting percentage and had a match-best four blocks. For the second straight outing, Hana Michael tied her career high with 15 kills and completed a double-double with 10 digs. Hannah Seitter tallied 18 digs, and Taryn Trubich added 30 assists. Connor Borgmeier led UIS with 19 kills, while Ashley King led the defense with 31 digs.
 
The Saints stand at 1-10 overall, 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Illinois Springfield improves to 3-5 overall, 1-1 in the league. Maryville is back in action Tuesday as it welcomes crosstown rival Missouri-St. Louis to Moloney Arena for a 7 p.m. match.
