William Jewell’s Olivia Dykes scored in the seventh minute of the first overtime session to hand the Maryville women’s soccer team a 2-1 defeat in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on a sunny afternoon in St. Louis. The game was the second straight overtime contest for the Saints, who played a scoreless draw against McKendree Wednesday.

Dykes scored the first goal of the game as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead at the 33:36 mark of the first half. WJC strung together two long passes to take the lead. The visitors nearly doubled their lead but Maryville keeper Mandy Browning came up with the save to keep the Saints within one score. The play proved to be pivotal as Maryville then drew level less than two minutes later. The Saints earned a corner kick, and Sam Poteet flew above the crowd in the box to head in the pass from Cydney Robertson to equalize at 49:13. The score is Poteet’s team-leading third goal of the season. The Cardinals had a wide open chance with just under eight minutes left in regulation but Browning again denied WJC.

The game moved to an extra session and the Saints earned two corner kicks midway into the first OT. However, WJC collected the ball deep in its territory for a counter, and Ashley Licata fed Dykes for the game winner with 3:41 left in the first overtime. The Saints drop to 2-5-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the GLVC. The Cardinals improve to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the league. Maryville is back in action Sunday when it hosts Rockhurst for a Noon contest.
