Behind a career-high 14 kills from
Laura Welling, the Maryville volleyball squad smashed a nine-game skid with a 3-1 victory over Drury Friday evening. The Saints downed the Panthers 25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 26-24 and recorded their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season.
Set one was tied 21-21 before two straight kills gave the Saints the lead. After a Drury point,
Demi Maniaci terminated a point, and
Mikaela Lahm’s swing ended the set for the Saints 25-22. The second set unfolded in nearly the same manner with the same result. The teams were tied at 22-22 before Maryville tallied the final three points of the set. Welling started the set-winning run, and Drury committed a hitting error. Maniaci drilled home a pass from
Megan Baumgartner as the Saints took another 25-22 lead.
The Panthers recorded their best hitting percent of the match in set three, while the Saints struggled to finish points as Drury eased to the win in set three. In what would prove to be the final set, at 22-all Drury committed a service error, and Maniaci served up an ace to reach match point. However, Drury scored two straight to force a 24-24 tie. Welling’s next swing again gave the Saints match point, and
Hana Michael drilled in the game winner for Maryville.
Welling hit .265 for the match and to pace the Maryville attack. Lahm added 12 kills and posted six blocks, the most by a Saints player this season.
Julia Greaves added five blocks. Michael came up with 19 digs, also the most by a Maryville player this year.
The Saints improve to 2-13 on the year, 1-5 in the GLVC, while dropping Drury to 8-8 overall, 3-3 in the league. Maryville entertains Missouri S&T Saturday in a 3 p.m. match at Moloney Arena.
