Maryville battled at Missouri S&T through the first half, but the Miners headed in a ball off a corner kick in the second half to post a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference Sunday afternoon in Rolla, Mo.
In the first half, the Saints had a good scoring chance on a hard shot by
Jen Jung but Miner keeper Madison Gibler came up with the save. Midway through the first period,
Hana McGinis again tested the Missouri S&T defense but her shot was saved, too. The Saint defense was strong and kept the Miners scoreless as intermission arrived at 0-0.
The Miners earned a corner kick in the 48th minute and Kendall Fitzpatrick headed the pass for what would prove to be the only goal of the game. Maryville stepped up its attack and nearly scored on back-to-back changes midway in the second half. Jung again launched a hard shot but was denied. McGinis nearly drew the Saints level when she hit the crossbar in the 62nd minute. Maryville was awarded a penalty kick in the 74th minute but the Saints’ bid to tie the game missed wide as the Miners held on for the victory.
The Saints slip to 2-6-3 overall, 1-4-3 in the GLVC, while the Miners are 5-5, 3-5 in the league.
