THIS WEEK:
The Maryville volleyball team (0-4) gets back to action with a busy slate of five matches this week. The Saints trek to Elsah, Ill., to face Principia College Tuesday, Sept. 4. Maryville heads to Kearney, Neb., to play in the Victorian Inn and Suites/Runza Fall Classic. Play begins Friday, Sept. 7 with matches against host Nebraska-Kearney at noon and Truman State at 4 p.m. The tourney concludes Saturday, Sept. 8, with a 10 a.m. match versus St. Cloud State and a 2 p.m. tilt against Northern State.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS:
Principia is 2-1 after defeating Rockford and Iowa Wesleyan at the Monmouth Invitational. Nebraska Kearney, ranked No. 2 is this week's AVCA Top 25 poll, is 3-0 after playing at the Vulcan Classic in Hilo, Hawaii. Truman State stands at 3-1, with its only loss coming at the hands of No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth. St. Cloud State is 3-1 after playing in the Upper Iowa tournament. Northern State went 3-1 at its own invitational to start the year.
MORE ON MARYVILLE:
Mikaela Lahm leads the Saints with 32 kills after four matches, and
Taryn Trubich tops the team with 54 assists.
Hannah Seitter has a team-high 48 digs, while
Demi Maniaci leads with seven blocks.
RETURING FOR THE SAINTS:
Julia Greaves leads all returning Saints players with 158 kills from a year ago.
Mikaela Lahm finished with 137 kills, second on the squad, and led the team with 62 total blocks.
Hannah Seitter led Maryville with 220 digs a year ago, and
Jamie Kloss finished with 201 digs.
NEW FACES:
The Saints added six newcomers to the veteran players. Joining Maryville this season are:
Samantha Callahan (Maryland Heights, Mo. / Pattonville);
Katie Clayton (Jacksonville, Ill. / Jacksonville);
Hana Michael (Collinsville, Ill. / Althoff Catholic);
Taryn Trubich (Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield Central);
Kelsey Warden (St. Charles, Mo. / Francis Howell North) and
Laura Welling (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Bishop Luers).
LAST SEASON:
Maryville finished the 2011 season with an 8-18 overall record, 3-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints doubled their win total from the previous season.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Maryville’s home opener is also its GLVC opener against Quincy Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in Simon Center. The Saints welcome Illinois Springfield Saturday, Sept. 15, for a 3 p.m. match.
