The Maryville women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid as they cruised to a 68-51 victory over visiting McKendree in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday evening in Moloney Arena. Abby Duethman recorded a double-double to pace the Saints with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Shelby Miller scored on a layup and Kate Childs drained a 3-pointer to give the Saints a quick 5-0 lead, an advantage they would not surrender the rest of the night. Maryville held a 17-11 lead eight minutes in before embarking on a 9-0 run. Brittany Fish hit one free throw to start the run, and Brittnye McSparron scored on two straight layups. Duethman grabbed an offensive rebound for a put back and later rattled in a short shot for a 26-11 lead.

The Bearcats ended a nearly seven-minute scoring drought before the Saints closed out the half on a 15-4 run. Miller and Duethman keyed the burst with consecutive 3-pointers as Maryville grabbed a 41-17 lead at halftime. The Saints forced McKendree into shooting just 24 percent from the field and 12 turnovers in the first half.

The Saints took their biggest lead of the contest at 26 points when Duethman scored in the lane for a 43-17 advantage early in the second half. The Maryville lead remained near 20 points for large stretches of the second half. The Bearcats got as close as 54-38 with eight minutes left to play before the Saints sealed the win with a bucket by Duethman and a trey by McSparron.

Duethman hit 8-of-15 shots from the field en route to her fourth double-double of the season. In addition, she has closed to within 20 points of breaking the all-time scoring record at Maryville.
McSparron finished with 14 points, while Erica Lorton added six rebounds for the Saints. The Maryville defense limited the Bearcats to 27.7 percent shooting on the night. Liz Gilman led the visitors with 18 points, while Caty Ponce finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Saints even their record at 6-6 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC, while the Bearcats slide to 5-6 overall, 0-3 in the conference. Maryville hosts Bellarmine Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest.
