The Maryville women’s basketball team saw a late rally come up short in a 72-64 defeat at William Jewell Thursday in Liberty, Mo.
Abby Duethman tied her career high with 27 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. In the process, she moved into third place on the all-time rebounding list with 540.
The Saints struggled shooting the ball in the first half and were down 32-24 at halftime. The Cardinals slowly stretched their lead in the second half to as much as 56-42 with under 12 minutes to play before Maryville mounted a big comeback.
Rita Flynn scored inside to start the comeback. Duethman sandwiched two hoops around a
Shelby Miller layup as the Saints scored on three straight possessions during a 9-0 run. The Cardinals finally scored to build their edge back to 58-51.
Miller drained two free throws and two straight buckets from
Angela Pepowski pulled the Saints to 58-57 with five minutes to play. After the Cardinals scored,
Kate Childs sank a long jumper to pull Maryville to 60-59 with 3:46 to go. However, William Jewell scored the next five points for a 65-59 cushion. Duethman tallied a basket as the Saints cut the gap to four with just over a minute left in the game, but the Cardinals hit three of four free throws down the stretch to keep the Saints at bay.
Duethman hit 11-of-17 shots, the most field goals she has made in a game in her career, to pace the Saints. Miller added 14 points but was the only other Saint in double figures. Katlyn Wood led William Jewell (9-4, 3-2 GLVC) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Saints see their two-game winning streak end and are 7-7, 3-3 in the league.
Maryville returns to action Saturday as they play at Rockhurst in a 1 p.m. contest.
